Gold Coast Beaches

[See a Gold Coast map for beach locations]

There is absolutely no doubt that the magnificent golden beaches are the jewel in the Gold Coast tourism crown. Clear waters, fine golden sands, a mix of ocean swells and secluded estuaries, surf life savers patrolling bathing locations... this is what lures visitors year after year.

An unparalleled focus on beach safety makes the Gold Coast a favourite destination for family holidays and the the Gold Coast City Council patrols more beaches than any other Australian local authority, utilising jet skis, boats, helicopters and watercraft in its rescue operations.

The Gold Coast provides top surfing conditions in several locations with Burleigh Point, Duranbah, Kirra and South Stradbroke being a few of the better known spots. Surfing is a major activity on the Gold Coast which hosts international championships such as the Billabong Pro

For many years, the Australian national surf lifesaving titles were held at Kurrawa Beach at Broadbeach and attracted over 50,00 people. In recent years this event has been shared with other Australian surf locations.

There are many choices available in Gold Coast apartments and resorts, ranging from 3 star budget up to 5 star luxury, and available in both low rise and high rise buildings. Surfers Paradise has the greatest concentration of accommodation choices on the coast and Broadbeach is home to some of the most modern resorts.

Southport - Broadwater

The Gold Coast Broadwater is a magnet for all watersports enthusiasts and on any day you will find jet-skiers, windsurfers and parasailing. Equipment rentals available for visitors. The Broadwater is also a popular spot for fishing. Fisherman's Wharf is a small marina that is home for many of the boats that cruise the Broadwater and operate offshore game fishing charters.

One of the Gold Coast's major tourist attractions is Sea World, located on The Spit at Main Beach opposite the Broadwater. The park has dolphin, shark and sea lion shows, thrill-a minute ski shows, the exhilarating Bermuda Triangle ride and lots more.  Marina Mirage is the home of waterfront restaurants, cafes and stylish boutiques and is also located on The Spit. The superb marina hosts houseboats, luxury cruisers, fishing trawlers and yachts that enjoy this amazing calm water seascape.

Surfers Paradise - Main Beach

Surfers Paradise is the town and beach that symbolises the lifestyle of the Gold Coast. This 'paradise for surfers' is the heart of the Gold Coast with the busiest stretch of beach and beach activities.  "Surfers" offers bars, clubs, nightclubs and more restaurants per square kilometre than anywhere else in Australia.  There are major shopping centres and boutique retail outlets as well as kids entertainment, games and rides in the Paradise Centre.  Sit back and watch buskers, calypso bands and magicians ply their trade in the Cavill Mall.

Strolling the beach is a great way to appreciate the sheer size of the Gold Coast beaches and one such walk is to cosmopolitan Main Beach via Narrowneck. Head for Tedder Avenue with its mix of dining precinct and side walk cafes.

Broadbeach

Broadbeach is justifiably one of the major destinations for Gold Coast holiday makers.  Just a few kilometres south of Surfers Paradise, it has a safe, patrolled surf beach that has hosted some of Australia's major surf life saving competitions. Jupiters Casino offers 24-hour casino action, restaurants, bars and live stage shows. The casino complex and the shopping and dining precincts are linked via a modern monorail. The rstylish and modern Gold Coast Convention And Exhibition Centre is also located at Broadbeach.

Broadbeach Mall is a traffic free pedestrian mall that leads onto the main beach. There are over 40 restaurants, coffee shops and bistros within the mall and surrounding streets with children’s play equipment and fairground rides that operate during the holiday seasons. Broadbeach is the home of Pacific Fair, Queensland's largest shopping complex and it is easy to spend a day wandering through its cobbled streets, dazzling arcades and department stores.

Burleigh Heads

Burleigh Heads is located midway between Southport to the north and Coolangatta to the south, which geographically speaking, places it at the centre of the Gold Coast. Burleigh has always been a popular location for family holidays. It is a quiet, peaceful spot, but within easy reach of the lively nightlife to the north and the more relaxed family atmosphere of the southern beaches.

The beaches at Burleigh are flanked by parklands with picnic and BBQ areas. Burleigh Heads is renowned as a good surfing beach and regularly hosts surfing and iron-man competitions. The unspoilt headland offers amazing views of the surrounding coastline and is a proclaimed National Park and koala park. There are a number of walking trails within the National Park that offer panoramic views along the adjacent coastline. The popular Fleays Wildlife Park and Fauna Centre are located just west of Burleigh.

Palm Beach - Currumbin - Tallebudgera

The major attraction in this area is the Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary which has grown from a small, private bird sanctuary to a major wildlife reserve with many tourist attractions. A park highlight is the feeding of the rainbow lorrikeets that come swooping out of the surrounding bush at feeding times.

Currumbin Creek and Tallebudgera Creek have excellent calm water estuary conditions that are perfect for toddlers. Yet just around the corner are some of the Gold Coast's best surfing beaches.  The local Surf Lifesaving Club is always a favourite for a bite to eat or try a night out at the Currumbin RSL Club. There are some excellent panoramic views of the Gold Coast from this region.

Coolangatta - Kirra - Greenmount

This area has some of the prettiest beaches on the Gold Coast with bays and headlands providing an alternative to the sweeping expanse of shoreline elsewhere on the coast. The headland at Greenmount provides protection from the rolling ocean swells and the small waves are perfect for children. Just around the headland from Greenmount is Rainbow Bay, a fabulous little spot and a great favourite for family groups.

Duranbah is one of the most popular of all the surfing spots on the Gold Coast. Kirra is also one of the Gold Coast's better known surfing beaches, with challenging off-shore breaks for the experienced surfers and smaller inshore waves for the beginner.
