Maitland & Morpeth - rich in New South Wales history being one of Australia's original settlements. Home to some original Georgian style homes and public buildings showing examples of what the village was like in its heyday. Singleton - one of the oldest towns in New South Wales now servicing the surrounding coal mines. It marks the boundary between the upper and lower Hunter areas. Scone - at the top end of the Hunter Valley and known as the horse capital of Australia. There are about 50 thoroughbred studs in the area and visits are available to some of the studs. Horse Week is held in May each year. Newcastle - one of Australia's largest ports at the mouth of the Hunter River and the second largest city in New South Wales. Boasts some fine examples of early colonial architecture and a breakwater built by the convicts. Surf beaches just a few minutes from the city centre. Nearby Lake Macquarie is the largest salt water lake in Australia and is a popular sailing, waterskiing and fishing centre. A good collection of contemporary Australian art at the Newcastle Region Gallery. The Regional Maritime and Military Museum at Fort Scratchley. Gosford - easily reached by road and rail and serves as a central point for the attractions in the Central Coast area. Old Sydney Town is a theatrical recreation of how Sydney developed in the early pioneering days. Brisbane Water National Park for good bushwalking, aboriginal engravings and spring wildflowers.
