New South Wales Central West

The Central West area extends from the Blue Mountains north to Coonamble and Gunnedah, south to Cowra and west to Nyngan. This area has some of the earliest inland towns in Australia. An agricultural heartland with many historic New South Wales sites.

Farm stays, horse riding, underground caves, hot air ballooning, pioneer museums, fresh water fishing, rock climbing, gold fossicking.

Places of Interest In The Central West

Bathurst - laid out on a grand scale. Birthplace of Cobb & Co and an old gold rush town. Bathurst Historical Museum and the victorian cottage of Miss Traill. Drive the Mt Panorama motor racing circuit.

Visit the out-of-town Abercrombie House. Travel south to the 50 caves and Grand Arch of Abercrombie Caves, north to the historic gold mining sites of Sofala and Hill End.

Orange - winter snow on Mt Canobolas and apple blossoms in the orchards. No...not oranges. The name comes from William of Orange.

Orange is the birthplace of Banjo Patterson who wrote Waltzing Matilda. Gold fossicking at nearby Ophir.

Cowra - probably best known as a prisoner-of-war camp for Japanese soldiers during the World War 2. Now hosts a great Japanese Garden and cultural centre. Hot air ballooning from Canowindra on the road north.

Forbes - some imposing buildings reflecting its status during the gold rush days. Burial place of the bushranger Ben Hall.

Dubbo - all roads pass through here. Agricultural town serving the cattle and sheep farms of the region. The Western Plains Zoo with elephants and rhinos in an Australian landscape. The old Dubbo gaol and Dundullimal Homestead.

Mudgee - a good example of an Australian country town. A selection of established vineyards and a wine festival in September. A growing reputation for gourmet food and fine wine. Visit nearby Gulgong, another gold town and boyhood home of poet and writer Henry Lawson. A large array of Australiana.

Gilgandra - gateway to the sheep, wheat and cotton agriculture of the northern Nyngan and Coonamble regions of new South Wales. Swing north to Coonabarabran for the granite rock formations of the Warrumbungle National Park. Rock climbing allowed with permit. Visit the Siding Spring observatory.
