New South Wales Riverina

The Riverina comprises the southern and south western region of New South Wales heading west along the Murray River which forms the border with  Victoria.

This is an area of paddlewheel steamers, river gums, fertile pastures, thick forests, historic villages, vineyards, wineries and prosperous farming communities.

Activities include canoeing, white water rafting, water skiing, fishing, golf, cycling, bushwalking and cellar door visits.

Places of Interest In The Riverina

Wagga Wagga - the largest inland town in New South Wales. Pay a visit to Big Murray at the Murray Cod Hatcheries. Historic buildings in nearby Junee. National Art Glass Collection at the City Art Gallery.

Narrandera - located in the Murrumbidgee River Irrigation Area. Lake Talbot for water sports. Tours of the Inland Fisheries Research Station. Visit nearby Jerilderie, scene of some of the exploits of the famous bushranger, Ned Kelly.

Griffith - a major New South Wales wine producing and fruit growing area. Original development of the area was by Italian families whose ancestors still play a major role in the area.

Albury-Wodonga - Albury sits on the New South Wales side of the Murray River and Wodongo is on the Victorian side. A good base for linking to the high country skiing in winter, white-water rafting and canoeing.

Nearby wineries and historic gold mining towns. Major Australian artists at the Albury Regional Art Centre. Colourful characters at the Ettamogah pub. Ride the paddlewheel steamer.

Moama-Echuca - another case of two towns on opposite sides of the Murray River. Echuca on the Victorian side is the better known for its preserved original wharf and public buildings. Moama boasts the Rich River Country club and its well known golf course.

Deniliquin - home of superfine Merino wool and a large rice growing centre. The largest rice mill in the southern hemisphere. The Peppin Heritage Centre and the Island Sanctuary to meet some locals. The birdlife at the Gannawarra Wetlands at nearby Barham.

Wentworth - and old port town at the meeting point of the Murray and Darling Rivers. Along with its nearby Victorian neighbour, Mildura, is a jumping off point for heading up into the far west area from the south. Riverboat cruises and an historic site at the Wentworth Gaol.
