New South Wales Southern Highlands

The Southern  Highlands encompass the small towns and villages of the tablelands south of Sydney through to the high country of the Kosciusko National Park and Victorian border.

In the Southern Highlands expect lush countryside, quaint villages, magnificent gardens, lakes and waterfalls, forests, bushwalks, antiques, arts and crafts, restaurants and historic sites.

The high country of the Snowy Mountains is Australia's winter playground with a sophisticated skiing industry. Angling, bushwalking, wildflowers and the wide outdoors during the other seasons. A great region to explore at your own pace in a campervan or motorhome rental vehicle.

Places of Interest In The Southern Highlands

Mittagong and Bowral - Separate towns in close proximity. Bowral is the home town of the famous cricket player, Sir Don Bradman, and houses the Bradman Museum (now the International Cricket Hall Of Fame).

Head west for the Wombeyan Caves.  Adventure caving is available. Take the scenic route over Mount Gibraltar between these two towns. Corbett Gardens in Bowral in spring.

Berrima - a tiny town rich in New South Wales pioneering artefacts and buildings which remain little changed from the early pioneering days. Berrima Historical Museum. Visits to Joadja Ghost Town. Guided walks available. Ride a Cobb & Co coach.

Morton National Park - access via Bundanoon and Fitzroy Falls. Wilderness area with magnificent sandstone cliffs. Fitzroy and Belmore Falls. Visit the Fitzroy Falls Heritage Centre. From Fitzroy Falls, continue on to Kangaroo Valley.

Goulburn - you are unlikely to miss the Big Merino. A prosperous centre servicing the surrounding sheep and grazing districts. Known for its fine Merino wool. Impressive courthouse and visits available to The Old Goulburn Brewery.

Queanbeyan - on the NSW side of the border with Canberra but is now more an extension of Canberra rather than a separate town.

Tumut - Australia's largest commercial trout farm. Various visits to centres of the Snowy Hydroelectric scheme. Yarrangobilly Caves and thermal pool. Apple farms at Batlow.

Cooma - best known as the construction centre for the Snowy Mountains Hydroelectic Scheme. The Avenue of Flags commemorates the nationalities involved. Several historic buildings including the courthouse and gaol.

Jindabyne and Thredbo - names associated with Australia's ski resorts. Jindabyne offers a lake for swimming and boating in summer. Thredbo is the best known ski resort but there are several others at Perisher Blue, Charlotte Pass and Mt Selwyn. Travel the Alpine Way.
