Queensland Tropical Far North

Travel in the Queensland Tropical North extends from Cape York in the north to the sugar fields of Tully and Ingham in the south and the Northern Territory border in the west.

The Tropical North coastal areas offer a range of resorts, rainforests, barrier reef access, Australia's finest scuba diving, cruising and sailing, sport fishing, diving, jet boating, hot-air ballooning, white water rafting at several sites, sea kayaking and clear water canoeing.

The region is home to some of Australia's most popular tour activities. Tours in the Cape York and gulf savannah regions are usually supervised 4WD safari style tours. These tours last from a few days to a few weeks.

They will typically offer aboriginal cultures and lifestyles, wildlife, fishing, goldrush relics, Lawn Hill National Park and off road adventures.  This region boasts some of the world's best fresh water and ocean fishing. Visitors will never be at a loss finding things to do in Cairns.

Places of Interest - Far North Queensland

Cairns - major centre of the Tropical North and jumping off point for most travel, tours and holidays in the area. Cairns is at one end of the famous Kuranda Scenic Railway. Cairns accommodation caters to all budgets.

Cape York Peninsula - Usually 4WD tours from Cairns for 1 or 2 weeks. Aboriginal reserves and rock art, the famous cattle stations of the Gulf country, several national parks. Bauxite mining at Weipa, pearlers at Thursday Island, prawn fishing in the Gulf of Carpentaria and the Torres Strait Islands. "Beware Crocodile" signs are for real.

Gulf Savannah territory - aboriginal art, Lawn Hill National Park, goldrush relics, cattle stations, wildlife. Fish for the famous barramundi (in season). Undara lava tubes. "Beware Crocodile" signs are still for real. Travellers looking for something different can try two unique train tours.

Take a tour on the "Savannahlander", one of Australia's last frontier adventures which takes passengers on a safari from Cairns - Forsayth - Cairns through the remote heart of the savannah country. The "Gulflander", affectionately known as the "tin hare", is a grand old railmotor which carries a limited number of passengers through the Gulf country on a Normanton - Croydon - Normanton tour.
