Heading west, the region quickly changes to long stretches of flat semi-desert where the inhabitants are few and far between and generally reside at the occasional road stops dotted along the highway.

Places of Interest

Port Augusta - located at the top of the Spencer Gulf and one of Australia's foremost crossroad cities with road and rail branching out in all directions. The School of the Air and the Royal Flying Doctor both operate from here with tours available. The Wadlata Outback Centre for the history of Aboriginal and European settlement of the region.

South Australian vacationsWhyalla - an industrial steel producing town taking iron ore from the nearby mines. Tours are available of the BHP steelworks and the local iron ore mines. Whyalla has a Maritime Museum, a good wildlife and reptile sanctuary and historical exhibits at the Mt Laura Museum.

Whyalla to Port Lincoln - the road down the east coast of the Eyre Peninsula passes through Cowell, once a jade mining centre and now involved in oyster farming. Nearby Point Gibbon has excellent sand dunes and coastline. Head south through the quiet seaside townships of Arno Bay and Port Niell before reaching Tumby Bay with its white beaches and National Trust Museum. Offshore, the Sir Joseph Banks Islands are home to colonies of sea lions and marine birdlife.

Port Lincoln - situated at the bottom of the Eyre Peninsula and best known as the tuna capital of Australia. Port Lincoln has several historic buildings and some good lookouts over the coastline. Nearby Cape Carnot and the Lincoln National Park for their spectacular coastlines.

Port Lincoln to Ceduna - the west coast of the Eyre Peninsula. Surf beaches, rugged scenic coastlines, good fishing and peaceful isolation. Coffin Bay is a holiday village with quiet beaches, good fishing and nearby national parks. Elliston is a small resort and fishing township with salmon fishing at Lock Wells and spectacular coastal scenery at nearby Anxious Bay and Salmon Point. Streaky Bay is another coastal township offering good fishing.

South Australian holidaysCeduna - the eastern end of the Eyre Highway which crosses the infamous Nullabour Plain on its way to Norseman in Western Australia. A museum with pioneer exhibits and historical information from the atomic testing at Maralinga. Several sheltered surfing and fishing beaches in the Ceduna area. Whale watching from the shore at nearby Head of Bight during the June-October breeding season.
