South Australia Murray RiverThe area enclosed by the Murray River on its way to the coast at Lake Alexandrina, the border with Victoria, and south to the Western Highway as it crosses the border. The unique lagoons and the pelicans at the Coorong National Park. Agricultural communities in the small towns inland from the river. Fishing for both the fresh water and salt water enthusiast. This is a region of citrus plantations, vineyards, riverland country clubs, houseboats and water sports. Absorb the regions history in small river townships and paddlewheel steamers on the Murray River.

The River Towns - as the Murray heads to the coast it passes several small riverside towns in an area generally known as Riverland. Barmera has a National Trust listed hotel and adjoins the popular water sports spot at Lake Bonney. Waikerie is home to large birdlife populations on the surrounding lagoons and river. Morgan was once a busy river port and now offers a car ferry across the river. Swan Reach is near the lookout over the high riverside cliffs of the Murray at Big Bend. Mannum has many historical relics of the early pioneer days. The Cascade Waterfalls and Purnong Bird Sanctuary are nearby. Murray Bridge - the largest of the river towns and a popular day trip destination from Adelaide. As the name suggests, it is the site of the first bridge over the Murray River. Popular spot for fishing and watersports with a Butterfly House just out of town. Murray Bridge is a centre for river cruises. Nearby Tailem Bend is the last township on the river and has an historical village recreation in the Old Tailem Town. Coorong National Park - an unusual national park in the form of a narrow 140 km long coastal strip extending south from Lake Alexandrina. The park is a series of shallow lagoons and salt pans with a buffer of sand dunes separating them from the ocean. A natural home for water birds, especially pelicans. Duke's Highway - from Tailem bend, the highway heads south-east through the agricultural centres of Keith and the nearby Mt Rescue Conservation Park and on to Bordertown before reaching the border.
