South Australia Yorke Peninsula

The region takes in the boot shaped peninsula separating Spencer Gulf and Gulf St Vincent as well as the the famous Barossa Valley through the old copper mining regions and north to the agricultural areas inland from Port Pirie.

Quiet secluded holiday townships along the 600km of coastline, a major grain growing region, no shortage of wineries with cellar door sales for visitors and much of the state's history.

A fishing enthusiasts haven, try your hand at crabbing, all kinds of water sports and sailing. Dive the several wrecks or bushwalk the many trails throughout the region.

Places of Interest On The Yorke Peninsula

Barossa Valley - one of Australia's premier wine producing areas. A mix of several different cultures with the influences still evident in the towns of the Barossa Valley. Much of the Barossa can be explored by bicycle and hiking.

The region's main event is the Vintage Festival from easter Monday on odd numbered years but there are numerous other festivals. Lyndoch is at the southern end of the valley and has the nearby Pewsey Vale Homestead. Tanunda is in the centre of the valley and has relics of its German origins around Goat Square.

Early settlement of the valley is on display at the Barossa Valley Historical Museum.  Several fine old churches reflect the different denominations. The scenic route to Angaston via Bethany and Menglers Hill is recommended.

Nuriootpa is the commercial centre, and is at the northern end of the valley. Angaston has an English history and the National Trust listed Collingrove Homestead is a popular visit.

Gawler - one of the gateway towns to the Barossa and the state's oldest country town laid out by the Adelaide town planner Colonel William Light.

Auburn - a tiny village with excellent historic buildings and home of author C.J Dennis of Sentimental Bloke fame.

Clare - the major town of the Clare Valley, another wine producing region. One of the wineries is still run by the Jesuit Brothers. Bungaree Station is a nearby working property with several historical exhibits.

Burra - a heritage town with a mining history. Burra has numerous historic sites including examples of Cornish miners cottages at Paxton Square and Truro Street. The Burra Mine and Enginehouse Museum is worth a visit.

Port Pirie - an industrial town taking the mine output from Broken Hill in western New South Wales. As an alternative to the industrial exhibits and tours, pay a visit to the historic home of Carn Brae with its stained glass windows and dolls collection.

Yorke Peninsula - a popular holiday region within easy driving distance from Adelaide. Yorke Peninsula has a history of copper mines and Cornish miners but now primarily a producer of grain crops. Kadina is the major town on the peninsula and was the major copper mining centre. Most of the historic sites and museums focus on the copper triangle of Kadina - Walleroo - Moonta.

The road down the east coast of the peninsula hugs the coastline and passes through a series of small villages sitting on sandy beaches until it reaches the Innes National Park with its fishing, reef diving, surfing and home to lobster fishing fleets. The west coast has fewer townships and the road is generally inland.
