The western areas contain
beautiful national parks of mountain forests, streams and waterfalls. The northern area is
part of the agricultural heartland rising to the Central Highlands and lake district. The
east area is an imposing coastline with only a few small towns and villages along the way.
Views of the river and city from Mt Wellington. Historic Georgian buildings, sidewalk cafes and markets at Salamanca Place on the waterfront. Try your luck at the Wrest Point casino. Cruise the Derwent River. Take the Hobart Ghost tour and then visit the Cascade Brewery to settle the nerves.
Take a guided walk at the historic Battery Point Village. Visits to Cadburys chocolate factory (bookings essential), Maritime Museum, Anglesea Historic Barracks, Gasworks Village and The Shot Tower. Nearby Bruny Island, south of Hobart, is home to the Bligh Museum, Fairy penguins and a large reptile population. Head south from Hobart to Huonville for jet boating on the river and wilderness tours, and further south to Geeveston for rafting on the Picton River and access to the Hartz Mountain National Park. In the opposite direction, enjoy the nearby Georgian village of Richmond with it's cobbled streets, crafts and convict gaol. Continue on to Copping with it's colonial and convict museum and access to the Weilangta Rainforest walk.
Tasman Peninsula - home of Australia's oldest historical site at Port Arthur with relics from Australia's penal colony past, The Bush Mill and Narrow Gauge Railway. The eroded coastal formations around Eaglehawk Neck and the surrounding game fishing and scuba diving. The Tasmanian Devil Park at Taranna and the convict coal mine relics at Saltwater River.
The National Parks - Hartz Mountains National Park sits at the southern tip of Tasmania. It is a mountain wilderness park offering several walks ranging up to a full day. Mount Field National Park is north-west of Hobart and has The Russell Falls, Tall Tree Walk a trout farm. Some winter skiing depending on snow fall. Walks range from an easy stroll to alpine wilderness trails. Maria Island National Park sits off the east coast and requires ferry access. Offers wildlife, scenery and history. Accommodation is available in former convict quarters.
