Victoria Murray River

This is the north-west region of Vidtoria and dominated by the Murray River. Primarily an agricultural area with only a handful of towns and a small population overall. Historical sites attest to the days when the Murray River hosted a significant river transport industry.

The region leaves behind the lush green mountains and valleys of southern Victoria and transitions into the drier red semi-arid countryside typical of much of inland Australia.

The Mallee region of the west supports a major wheat industry.

Mostly river based activities. Houseboats, paddlewheel steamers, fishing, water-skiing, river bank camping. Several Golf and Country Clubs offering good golf courses.

Places of Interest On The Murray River

Echuca-Moama - two towns on opposite sides of the Murray River. Echuca on the Victorian side is the better known for its preserved original wharf, public buildings and historical exhibits.

Moama boasts the Rich River Country club and its well known golf course.

Swan Hill - Swan Hill Pioneer settlement is a recreation of a port town from the paddlewheel era in the form of an outdoor museum. Horse drawn carriages, vintage cars, paddlewheel steamers and a "Sound and Light" show in the evenings.

Mildura - citrus growing centre in a semi-arid region made possible by irrigation from the Murray River. Also several popular vineyards. A good jumping off point for visits north into New south Wales to Wentworth, Broken Hill and Lake Mungo. Walk amongst the river red gums and ride the paddlewheel steamer. Pay Big Lizzie a visit. Conquer the Perry Sandhills.

The Mallee Country - includes three National Parks, Hattah-Kulkyne, Murray-Sunset and Wyperfeld. Unique Mallee flora and fauna. Picturesque and peaceful. Major regional centre is Ouyen. 4WD safaris available. Major wheat farming areas surrounding the parks.
