Omeo -
set in the foothills of Mt Hotham on the southern tip of the
Alpine National
Park. 150
years of settlement history with a gold rush background and several home historic
buildings. Skiing, white water rafting, 4WD tours, fishing.
Dinner Plain -
11km from Mt Hotham in the Alpine National Park. Hill and cross country skiing, toboggan
slope and downhill run at
Mt
Hotham. Summer has bushwalking, mountain biking, trail rides
and a trek using llamas to carry the packs.
The Snow Fields -
Mt Hotham at 1750 metres offers good skiing and caters for beginners,
intermediate and advanced. Cross country over the Bogong Plains to
Falls Creek
at 1780 metres. Considered to be the best ski resort in Victoria with skiing direct from
lodge to lift and back from the slopes to lodge. Majority of runs are classed
intermediate. 30 km of trails and good cross country skiing.
Enjoy the pristine high
country and alpine atmosphere as you travel north to
Bogong and
Mt
Beauty, popular skiing, tour and adventure centres for the region.
Experienced skiers can try to master Mt Bogong, one of Victoria's highest
peaks. Mt Buffalo
at 1750 metres is further north. An excellent National Park with a small resort for the
beginner and intermediate with some testing cross-country. Season is usually shorter
here than
the other fields.
Mt Buller at 1600 metres is within 3 hours of Melbourne
and is a very popular resort with a good mix of slopes for all skill levels. More
dependant on snow making equipment in low snow conditions.
Mt Baw Baw at 1480 metres
is the most southerly of the resorts and is popular with novices and family
groups.
Generally a relaxed resort without the crowds of the other more popular locations. Cross
country trails available.
Bright -
set in the Ovens Valley close to Mt Buffalo. Known for its colourful displays in autumn
and spring and has a reputation for high country adventure activities.
Beechworth -
has long been a popular tourist destination. Several historical buildings classified by
the National Trust dating from the gold rush era.
The Burke Museum for replicas and relics
of that time, the Powder Magazine and the Chinese Burning Towers and the Chinese graves.
Yackandandah -
the entire village has been classified by the National Trust for its historical value.
Many fine old buildings attest to its wealth in the gold rush days.
Albury-Wodonga -
Albury sits on the NSW side of the Murray River and
Wodonga is on the Victorian side. A
good base for linking to the high country skiing in winter, white-water rafting and
canoeing. Nearby wineries and historic gold mining towns. Major Australian artists at the
Albury Regional Art Centre. Colourful characters at the Ettamogah pub. Ride the
paddlewheel steamer.
Wangaratta - turn off point from the Hume Highway to the
northern ski fields. Burial place of the bushranger "Mad Dog Morgan". Vintage
aircraft display at the local airport. Annual Jazz Festival in late October.
Glenrowan -
a small village kept alive by the legend of the bushranger
Ned Kelly who was captured
alive in a shoot-out with police here in 1880. Ned was later hanged in Melbourne
gaol.
Mansfield -
popular town providing access to the Mt Buller snow fields in winter and the 500 km of
shoreline waters of
Lake Eildon in summer. All forms of water recreation
on the lake. Mansfield Mountain Country Festival in October. Hot air balloon festival in
April. Burial place of 3 policemen killed by Ned Kelly and his outlaws gang.
Shepparton -
major centre of the renowned fruit and vegetable farms of the area. Tours of the
Shepparton Preserving Company. Variety of harvest festivals in February and March.
