South East Victoria comprises a region stretching from the border with New south Wales and following the coastal belt down to Western Port and Phillip Island in the south. This area is all about lakes, rivers and
beaches. No highrise, no beachfront development, just untouched wilderness.
Buchan
-
an inland town and gateway to the
Snowy River National Park and the Alpine National Park.
4 WD tours, abseiling, white water rafting, caving and cave tours. Trout fishing in the
Timbarra and Buchan Rivers. Take the tour linking Buchan with The Junction and Gelantipy. Lakes Entrance - a very popular holiday destination. Warm winters and mild summers. Fishing in the lakes, rivers and ocean. Hire boats, catamarans, windsurfers, canoes, jet skis plus every imaginable form of water fun or transport. Kite flying, fauna parks, historic homesteads and aquarium. Nearby Metung and Paynesville are villages in the heart of the Gippsland Lakes offering peaceful relaxation and ideal centres for boating holidays.
Bairnsdale - the largest centre of the lakes area. Junction of the Princes Highway along the coast and the Omeo Highway turning inland towards the high country. A sensible location for those wanting to combine coast and country. Sale - the major town of the Gippsland region and situated on the junction of the Princes Highway and the Gippsland Highway. An ideal jumping off point to the Ninety Mile Beach in the south. The Sale Wetlands are a popular location for bird enthusiasts. A short drive to the north takes in the timber town of Heyfield, now one of the gateways to the high country and part of the Country Road Scenic Drive network. Nearby Stratford was the first permanent settlement in Gippsland and is on the Pioneer Way Heritage Trail.
Ninety Mile Beach - pristine white sands and coastal dunes stretching
from Port Albert in the west to Lakes Entrance in the east. Best appreciated by
following the
Ninety Mile Beach Wildlife Trail from Sale through the holiday retreat of
Loch
Sport, then back along the coastline through Golden Beach and
Seaspray.
A short detour inland and then its back to the fishing villages at
McLoughlans
Beach, Manns Beach and historic charm of Port Albert.

marine life. Traralgon - originally a rest stop for gold miners passing through. Now a major paper and pulp centre and the focus of Victoria's energy industry. Remnants of the gold rush architecture are still visible in the town. Loy Yang power station to the south is one of Australia's biggest engineering ventures. Morwell - an industrial town servicing local power station, coal mines and pulp and paper industries. Mine tours available as part of the town's promotion of industrial tourism.
