South East Victoria comprises a region stretching from the border with New South Wales and following the coastal belt down to Western Port and Phillip Island in the south. This area is all about lakes, rivers and beaches. No highrise, no beachfront development, just untouched wilderness.
Rich river flats support agriculture and timber industries. Rainforest Centre offers information on the cool and warm temperate rainforests of the area. Impressive coastline at Cape Conran Reserve. Pt Ricardo beach for surf fishing and great sunsets. Explore nearby Bemm River and Point Hicks. Visits to Grandview Lookout. Buchan - an inland town and gateway to the Snowy River National Park and the Alpine National Park. 4 WD tours, abseiling, white water rafting, caving and cave tours. Trout fishing in the Timbarra and Buchan Rivers. Take the tour linking Buchan with The Junction and Gelantipy.
Kite flying, fauna parks, historic homesteads and aquarium. Nearby Metung and Paynesville are villages in the heart of the Gippsland Lakes offering peaceful relaxation and ideal centres for boating holidays. Bairnsdale - the largest centre of the lakes area. Junction of the Princes Highway along the coast and the Omeo Highway turning inland towards the high country. A sensible location for those wanting to combine coast and country. Sale - the major town of the Gippsland region and situated on the junction of the Princes Highway and the Gippsland Highway. An ideal jumping off point to the Ninety Mile Beach in the south. The Sale Wetlands are a popular location for bird enthusiasts. A short drive to the north takes in the timber town of Heyfield, now one of the gateways to the high country and part of the Country Road Scenic Drive network. Nearby Stratford was the first permanent settlement in Gippsland and is on the Pioneer Way Heritage Trail.
A short detour inland and then its back to the fishing villages at McLoughlans Beach, Manns Beach and historic charm of Port Albert. A visit to Nooramunga Marine Park offers a chance to see the local marine life. Traralgon - originally a rest stop for gold miners passing through. Now a major paper and pulp centre and the focus of Victoria's energy industry. Remnants of the gold rush architecture are still visible in the town. Loy Yang power station to the south is one of Australia's biggest engineering ventures.
Moe - coal mining town with some interesting historical displays. Old Gippsland Pioneer Township has many old buildings and working displays of old crafts. Gippsland Heritage Centre. Travel north to Walhalla on the goldfields railway and visit the restored gold mining town. Wilsons Promontory - a very popular national park, one of the first to be established in the world. A top destination for all walkers. Estuarine swamps, fern gullies, rainforest and wildlife, some of which has become very tame. Over 80km of walking tracks with the Mt Oberon and Squeaky Beach walks recommended.
